This week I finished the first draft of my upcoming novel, Secrets in the Water. Yipee! This is Book Four of the Colt Jessup series. Creating the story from the beginning to the end was the fun part. Now comes the hard work of editing, formatting, and marketing. Although editing is a tedious process, I am enjoying reading through my work and seeing the plot develop. Since I started this project back in July of last year, reading some passages is like reading something written by someone else because I forgot what I wrote!
Last summer when I submitted the first twenty pages to my critique group for their feedback, a writer sent me an email stating this was my best work yet. I valued his opinion since he was an accomplished author himself. Notice how I used the word was? Sadly, Jim died soon after making that remark. I miss his friendship and his feedback so much.
I agree with Jim. As I read through the manuscript, I believe Secrets in the Water is truly my best work to date. What makes this story special is how I have combined two time periods: the present and fifteen years earlier. It has been fun switching back and forth to see how something in the past has affected the present.
People sometimes ask me which one of my books I like best. Hands down, this is it. Secrets in the Water is my favorite, and if you are a fan of the Colt Jessup series, you might agree, although I love them all as if they’re my babies, which in a way there are!
