When Drought Gives Up Secrets

My upcoming novel, Secrets in the Water, is about the discovery of a car in a lake. Found inside the vehicle are the bodies of a man and a woman. They went missing fifteen years ago and only because of a drought and low water level were they found. You might assume the inspiration for my story is the recent discovery of four bodies in Lake Mead, but you’d be wrong. The idea for my story has been rattling around in my brain for a long, long time. I only recently started putting it on paper.

A decade ago, I read in a newspaper about a car submerged in a lake that contained a body. If not for a drought, the discovery of the vehicle might never have happened. A story idea popped into my head, and I knew someday I would write it.

But I regress. Back to the bodies found in Lake Mead. Perhaps none has garnered more interest than the initial one discovered on the first of May. The body found inside a barrel had a gunshot wound. Based on the clothing found, the person died in the 1970s or 1980s. With the lake’s proximity to the gambling Mecca of Las Vegas, and the unusual manner used to dispose of the body, authorities believe the murder was mob related. Soon, I suppose authorities will find more bodies, maybe also murdered as the gunshot victim in the barrel.

We never know what water covers up, what water hides, what secrets water keeps to itself until a day comes when the water is no more.
